(sambhav means “possible”)
hillhacks grew out of an idea in 2013. By October 2014, an international team of hackers and makers put on the first hillhacks as an experiment in collaborative event production. “hh0” paved the way for the next edition “hh1” in May/June 2015.
… two week long huddle in the lap of Himalayas, Dharamsala, India for hacking, making and knowledge sharing around technology, life and society.
… where dreaming meets doing and creativity meets technology. Hacking is improvisation upon what is existing. hillhacks is a improvisation of the Earth from the hills.
… timeless, universal collaboration between the creative and curious ones wanting to create value for themselves and the world. hillhacks is organized by an open coalition of community volunteers from Dharamsala, India, Germany, Japan and other countries. CCC.de, freaklabs.org, mindgrep.com, Jaaga.in, Mozilla India, Wikimedia etc are some of the participating organizations. And here is a little about the history.
//**Imagine A Creative Place**…
…where the driven and like minded shape the dream of a beautiful and caring world. …Where you talk about technology, freedom and innovation, and people around you understand. …Where you see people working on projects driven by the heart, vision or curiosity. …Where people think on different levels and in different dimensions. …Where people connect, collaborate and are excellent to each other. //
When caring, able minded and driven beings will come together to dream a beautiful world, there is bound to be a significant positive change.
hillhacks facilitates the coming together of such people through an open mailing list, chat and most importantly, an annual event with temporary hackspaces/hackbase, workshops and talks. Here is a long list of topics we (and you?) are interested in. While this list is long, it does not mean that this is all. We are open to any topics around technology, society, security, ethics, art, culture, making, and so on. While the core of hillhacks is around technology, the platform is open to any questions, ideas, workshops or projects that pertain to well being of society and earth in general.
Regarding a lot talks and discussions on the mailinglist and our first conference calls in early 2014, we extracted the following main “pillars” or ideas, that seem to guide us as persons into doing this event:
Students, locals, general public
Because at the end only this will help.
Exchange within experts / lovers
We can only do good, if we love what we do.
Hardware and making
Gaining independence/freedom on so many levels...
"mindful and caring" (ethics/society/politics)
...to shape and develop our world in the "right" way
In the 2014 project description for a funding application (PDF, 60kB) we put this together into the following:
From around 11th of October on wards we will prepare and conduct workshops. Already outlined are workshops that includes soldering and laser cutting, others will teach web development, security, and protection online. In addition there will be some general introductions into topics like Wikipedia or OpenStreetMaps (which is astonishingly good in the Himalayas), networks and the history of the internet and web, as well as the making-side of hacking and using technology in creative contexts.
Besides learning and teaching it is also about the joy and mindfulness: People that think differently about technology and de-emphasize the commercial and exclusionist aspects of it come together and share thoughts to contribute to an open information society. As such a society, we are free to shape our world, if we use the power of our combined heads, hands and hearts – we have more knowledge then all the companies and governments together.
For that reason the workshops culminate into a conference of like-minded people, surrounded by the temporary hackerspaces as homes of various projects and their tools. Those homes will be similar to the concept of the assemblies of the CCC conferences – those conferences are serving as an example in many ways.
What we actually did in 2014:
Find a collection of pictures and blogposts on our site media, see most of the activities covered (also pre-events) in a report(PDF) which we made for one of our partners. Also scroll the twitter-feed, 2014 we were quite good in covering the activities (unlike 2015, so far, stated at May 13 :D). We started at 11th October 2014 with the actual event, so maybe scroll down to that date and start moving up :D Many Pictures there! (Pre-events happened from May-September and are also mainly covered there. Also check out the calendar if interested what has happened.
